Congratulations to our Head of the Mechanics of Materials Group Professor Helen Atkinson for the continuing success in her already outstanding profession.

Professor Atkinson recently received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Liège in Belgium for her exceptional international career as a metallurgist and materials engineer.

This is a wonderful addition to the awards she has already received in the UK, which put her right at the top in the engineering industry:

  • In 2007 she was honoured with a Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the highest accolade in her discipline.
  • In 2010 she was named as one of the UKRC’s Women of Outstanding Achievement for her leadership and inspiration within Science, Engineering and Technology.

Professor Atkinson's research is focussed on how to form semi-solid metals, which has a widespread use in industry for making mobile phone cases, laptop cases and parts for cars, and helps to save energy and costs. National and international recognitions for her work have strengthened her position as the crème de la crème of the industry.
