More Santas on the run

A few days ago we reported on University involvement in the Loughborough Santa Run which took place on Sunday 4 December. That same day, another jollity* of Santas assembled in Victoria Park, next to the University of Leicester, including numerous University staff and students. The 200 or so Santas present were there for the Great Leicester Santa Run 2011, which was promoted by our Sports Development Department.

The 5km course was only one of the challenges for the Santas on the day, the first was to get the 'One Size Fits All' Santa suit to stay in place. Various placements of belts, sticky tape and safety pins allowed all participants to make it to the warm area in time for their second challenge.

For this the Santas’ agility and rhythm were put to the test with a 15-minute zumba warm up class taken by instructor Kathy Hector. While half the Santas performed salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton moves with ease the rest looked on with confused stares, tangled legs and reddening faces. By the time Leicester City legend Steve Walsh rescued them to start the race, many were already planning an afternoon snooze to recover.

The University sports clubs were keen to be involved in the fun with teams entering from Women's Rugby, Tennis, Futsal, Medics, Dodgeball and the Running Club.

Times weren't important, just getting round the course which weaved all around the park was the goal which everyone managed, and along the way plenty of money was raised for the When You Wish Upon a Star charity. And all this before Sunday lunch!
