Astronomer and Blue Peter producer to receive Honorary Degrees

At our next Graduation Ceremonies in January, the University will bestow Honorary Degrees on two notable names with Leicester connections.

While studying for a BSc in Astrophysics in our Department of Physics and Astronomy in the early 1970s, Nigel Henbest met Heather Couper and their shared interest in astronomy led to the foundation of Hencoup Enterprises, popularising science through a series of books, television programmes and other sources.

Over the years, Nigel has worked in various communication/consultancy roles for the British Astronomical Association, the Royal Greenwich Observatory, New Scientist and many other bodies.

In March this year, Heather Couper and Nigel Henbest jointly gave the annual Alumni Lecture on the history of astronomy. Heather received an Honorary Degree from the University of Leicester in 1994, and in 2012 it’s Nigel’s turn.

To anyone above a certain age, the name Biddy Baxter is synonymous with Blue Peter, on which she served as producer, then editor, from 1962 to 1988, devising many of the programme’s distinctive features. Baxter was born in Leicester and educated at Wyggeston Girls’ Grammar School, which is now Regent College, adjacent to the University of Leicester.

Biddy Baxter and Nigel Henbest will receive their Honorary Degrees in front of a hall full of new Leicester graduates on 27 January 2012. More detailed biographies of each will be posted on Newsblog nearer the date.
