One of the top ten African women in ICT.

Tuesday was National Women’s Day in South Africa and, in honour of the event, the ITNewsAfrica website published a list of the top ten women working in the field of Information and Communication Technology in Africa.

Number seven on the list is Betty Mwangi-Thuo who has an MBA from our School of Management (as well as a B.Eng from the University of Manchester). Betty is Chief New Products Officer at Safaricom, a Vodafone affiliate which is one of Kenya’s leading mobile service providers with 12 million subscribers.

She joined the company in December 2007, just after the launch of its groundbreaking M-PESA* money transfer service, and has overseen the growth and development of this highly acclaimed technology. M-PESA allows money transfer via mobile phone without the need for a bank account (which many Kenyans do not have).

Betty oversees many other products and services at Safaricom and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Kenya Institute of Management.

*’Pesa’ is the Swahili word for money.
