The University of Leicester is co-organiser of a Dickens Day in London next week.

'Mr Popular Sentiment': Dickens and Feeling is a one-day conference on Saturday 16 October 2010 at the Institute of English Studies in London. The event is organised by the IES, the Dickens Fellowship, Birkbeck and the University of Leicester.

Speakers from our School of English include Professor Gail Marshall on 'Sydney Carton and Hetty Sorrel: Popular Sentiments and Public Executions in 1859' and PhD student Catherine Malcolmson on ' "A Veritable Dickens Shrine": Commemorating Dickens at the Dickens House Museum'. The day will be introduced by our very own Dr Holly Furneaux.

Other speakers come from Kent, Birmingham, Cambridge, Oxford, Reading and even the University of Ottago in New Zealand. The day will conclude with a look at Dickens Journals Online, a project at the University of Buckingham to digitise the entire runs of the journals which Dickens edited.
