We love our academics!

For the past month, the University of Leicester Students' Union has been asking students to nominate their favourite tutor or lecturer, a scheme with the heart-warming name I Love My Academic. And now the winners have been announced.

Devised by SU Academic Affairs Officer Alex Smith, I Love My Academic invited students to nominate an academic who has been particularly engaging, innovative or supportive in their teaching – and to back up their choice with a short supporting statement. The winners were chosen, not by number of votes but by judging the reasons given by students as to why they nominated who they did.

In total, more than 700 nominations were received for nearly 300 academics across the full range of departments – a tremendous vote of confidence in the quality of teaching at the University.

One winner was chosen from each of our four colleges:

College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology: Dr Bob Norman

Students say: “He inspired the medical students to go beyond the taught course and also encouraged some to get involved with the basic lab work.”

Bob says: “I am really grateful to students who took their time to nominate me. It is very nice to have one’s work recognised in this way…it is all part of the service.”

College of Social Sciences: Dr Ipek Demir

Students say: “I liked the fact she tries to get us involved… and uses current examples to keep things relevant.”

Ipek says: “I would like to thank all the students who took the trouble to nominate me for this award. It's very gratifying to see that my efforts are recognised and appreciated by the students.”

College of Arts, Humanities and Law: Christopher Bisping

Students say: “He uses humorous examples when explaining complicated legal principles which helps put it in more understandable terms.”

Christopher says: “I am thrilled to receive this award in recognition of my teaching. This award highlights the importance of teaching for Universities and supports the endeavours to have teaching recognised as equal to research. I would like to thank my students for nominating me and for making teaching a pleasure.”

College of Science and Engineering: Dr Geoff Folkard

Students say: “His lectures are always interactive… he involves the students as much as possible by asking direct questions or having the class vote on the correct answers.”

Geoff says: “I am touched. I put a lot of effort into teaching and am very appreciative of the students’ appreciation. It is nice to get recognition in this regard.”

Every academic who received a nomination from their students will be sent a certificate from the Students’ Union.
