Senior appointment at University of Ghana for Leicester PhD graduate.

Ghanaian news sources report that Dr Margaret Ivy Amoakohene has been appointed Acting Director of the School of Communication Studies at the University of Ghana.

Dr Amoakohene holds a PhD in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester. Through our Department of Media and Communications she wrote a thesis on ‘Political Communication in an Emerging Democracy: A Comparative Analysis of Media Coverage of Two Presidential Administrations in the Fourth Republic of Ghana’.

Born in the Brong Ahafo region of the country, she studied for a BA in French and Spanish at the University of Ghana in the early 1980s. She has been a senior lecturer at the university since 1992 but took time out from 2006 to 2009, to serve as the country’s High Commissioner to Canada (starting work in Ottawa the day after receiving her Leicester PhD).

Interestingly, there is a long history of ties between Ghana and Canada, dating back to 1906 when Quebecois missionaries established a church in the country. There are estimated to be between 8,000 and 20,000 Ghanians resident in Toronto.

In addition to her academic and diplomatic work, Dr Amoakohene has sat on the boards of the Ghana News Agency, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and that country’s National Film and Television Institute.
