When students head home at Easter for four weeks of relaxation and/or revision, they often leave odd packets and tins of food in the Halls of Residence. Time was when this would be collected up by the cleaners and disposed of with all the other rubbish.

But at Leicester a team of student volunteers, co-ordinated by the indefatigable Mrs Sheila Brucciani, swoops into halls - just as the students are packing a term’s worth of dirty washing into giant rucksacks – and collects all the unused, unopened foodstuffs.

These are then donated to the Red Cross who distribute them to homeless people and asylum seekers across the city.

This year, enough food was collected to fill twenty shopping trolleys.
