Niobium-mining in New South Wales.

The business section of the Sydney Morning Herald reports on comments made by Ian Chalmers, Managing Director of Australian rare earth mining company Alkane Resources Ltd.

Mr Chalmers, who has worked in the mining and exploration industry for 36 years, has an MSc from the University of Leicester. Alkane Resources extracts rare earth minerals such as zirconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum and yttrium through mining operations in New South Wales.

Rare earth minerals such as these have many technological applications and Mr Chalmers points out that the market is changing considerably as China, traditionally a major exporter of rare earth elements, is increasingly using the minerals domestically and exporting the products instead.

The full interview with Mr Chalmers is available as a PDF on the Alkane Resources website.
