VC opens news Bronchoscopy Suite and Respiratory Science Lab

State-of-the-art facilities for research into asthma and COPD.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Robert Burgess, yesterday opened a brand new Bronchoscopy Suite and Respiratory Science Laboratory at Glenfield Hospital which will provide terrific new facilities for researchers from the University of Leicester.

The Bronchoscopy Suite will be used for sampling material from patients which can then be examined in the laboratory. The facilities will benefit research into conditions such as asthma, which affects 5.4 million people in the UK, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which affects in the region of 3.7 million Britons.

Yesterday’s official opening coincided with the inaugural meeting of the Respiratory Science Collaboration – East Midlands, which is hosted by the University of Leicester.
