Yesterday was National Poetry Day and the English Association, which is hosted by the University of Leicester, took the opportunity to launch a new prize.

The Michael Murphy Prize will be awarded every two years for a distinctive first volume of poetry in English published in Britain or Ireland. Collections published between January 2008 and June 2011 are eligible for the inaugural prize which is worth £500.

Michael Murphy was a Liverpool-born poet who published three volumes of poems before his early death last year, aged 43, from a brain tumour.
