Some fresh new faces have joined the staff of our Department of Physics and Astronomy, School of English and Research Support Office.

Jim Hinton has recently come to Leicester as Professor of Observational Astronomy in the X-ray and Observational Astronomy group. Prior to this he was an STFC Advanced Fellow at the University of Leeds. Professor Hinton’s specialist area is very high energy gamma-ray astronomy also known as TeV astronomy (that’s ‘tera-electron volt’ or 1,000,000,000,000 electron volts).

Over the years Jim has worked in environments ranging from Namibia to the South Pole and he recently received a prestigious Philip Leverhulme Prize for “combining talent in experimental work with excellence in data analysis and interpretation.”

Dr Fowler has spent the past four years as a postdoctoral researcher with Lancaster University, working on a project called Moving Manchester. This involved interviewing creative writers in the city, creating an online catalogue of creative writing and curating an exhibition on literature in the city since 1960. She is now understandably keen to work in a similar way with the non-commercial creative writing community in the East Midlands.

Corinne has had collections of short stories and poetry published, has written a monograph about travel writing on Afghanistan and once walked from John O’Groats to Land’s End. She is now editing an annotated reprint edition of Beatrice Grimshaw’s 1907 travelogue From Fiji to the Cannibal Islands.

A lawyer by training, Brian joins us from the University of Birmingham and will oversee seven staff, providing specialist support services to the University’s researchers. This will include identifying new funding opportunities, managing submissions, costing applications and negotiating grants and contracts.
