A University of Leicester Mathematics graduate is fulfilling a lifelong ambition by launching a career as an operatic singer – via YouTube.

Recordings by David Keith Jones, a lecturer at Milton Keynes College, are now selling on iTunes and Amazon and have attracted the attention of his local newspaper, the Milton Keynes Citizen.

In 2008, David started a YouTube Channel called VoceVersatile with videos of his recordings from classical to the traditional, plus popular hits and standards. Today, more than 1,000 viewers from around the world visit VoceVersatile every day.

David said:

After a day-job career in education and industry plus part-time experience as a classical singer I find myself at 70 a part-time lecturer in computing at Milton Keynes College and trying to promote a musical career through iTunes while the voice is still secure enough to sing the big operatic arias.”

David’s most recent additions online include ‘Ev’ry Valley’ from Handel's Messiah, ‘Heart of Oak’, ‘E Lucevan le Stelle’  by Puccini, Schubert’s  ‘LiebesBotschaft’ and ‘Waft Her, Angels’ by Handel. Even within a few months of going on sale, many of David’s songs have been ranked ahead of leading classical singers.

David received his BSc in Mathematics from the University in 1963, where he remembers being taught by Professor RL Goodstein and being secretary and president of the Leicester University Student Mathematical Society.

He recalls:

During my studies I also sang in student productions, while receiving voice training. A particular highlight for me was a lunchtime recital in Queen's Hall in 1963 attended by Leicester historian Professor Jack Simmons.”

As a young tenor David could have joined the Welsh National Opera, but with an expanding family he decided against. Now that his children are grown, David is using his musical experience and digital recording skills to reach an international audience, warmly supported by his wife Jean Tatton Jones, a successful poet, internet artist and Leicester history graduate.

David's latest album is Operatic Bouquet, which is currently available on iTunes. For the nostalgic out there, David has also added to YouTube his version of the Beatles' 'Yesterday' set to a slideshow of his Leicester memories.
