Requests (holds)

Making a request

If a book, DVD or journal is on loan to another reader you may reserve it for yourself via the Library Search. To do this you will need to login with your IT username and password. When the requested item is returned to the Library you will be notified by email that it is available. The item will be kept on the "hold shelf" in the Express Zone on the Ground Floor of the University Library for collection:

ItemItem held for
Books DVDs, Journals
5 days

The number of requests placed on a title is automatically logged by the library system and may generate orders for extra copies.

The number of requests you can make at any one time is limited as follows:

Type of ReaderPermitted Holds
Academic staff and research postgraduates 30
Undergraduates 8

Where do I collect my requested book?

At the Library you can collect your book from the Express Zone on the ground floor. The requested books will be on the first range of shelving in shelf mark order. You can find your copy on the shelves by looking for the shelf mark and then checking that the 4 digits at the top of the slip inside the book match the last 4 digits of your library card number. All held items should be issued on the self-service machine located in the Express Zone.

Cancelling a request

If you no longer require an item you can cancel your request. To do this login to the Library Search page with your University IT username and password, click "My Account" and "Requests". Select the request you no longer require and click the "Cancel" button.

Recalled items

If you have an item on loan that is required by another reader you will not be able to renew the loan and you will receive a notice giving you a new date by which you must return the item.

If the request is cancelled or fulfilled by another copy, you'll receive an email advising you that the item is no longer needed.

Why don't I get sent a notice every time I have a book that someone else wants?

If you have a book that you have had on loan for at least 2 days and it is not due back for 7 days or more you will receive a notice telling you that the book is now wanted by another reader and giving you a new date to return it by. These are recalled items and a notice is sent because the Library is requesting they be returned earlier than the original due date.

If you have a book on loan that is due back in less than 7 days and another user has placed a hold on it you will not receive a notice. These are held items. Notices are not sent for these items because the due date is unchanged. You will still receive a reminder that these items are due for return, but you will be unable to renew them.
