PhD Students: RefWorks

This session allows you to use RefWorks to start creating a database of references which can then be stored, searched and used in conjunction with Word to input citations as you write.

Pre-requisites for this course: Familiarity with relevant databases through individual study or from attending ‘Conducting a literature search’ workshops. We would also recommend you use the online resource ‘Which bibliographic software is right for you?’ or have attended the ‘Introduction to reference management' session in order to know if RefWorks meets your needs.

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Create a RefWorks account.
  • Set-up the Word toolbar, for use on and off campus.
  • Practice importing references from a bibliographic database and from the
  • library catalogue.
  • Create a bibliography in Word, using the Write'N'Cite toolbar.
  • Create an independent bibliography from within RefWorks.

Suitable for: doctoral researchers at any stage.   

RDF: This session covers descriptors A1 (Knowledge base), B2 (Self-management) and C2 (Research management) of the Researcher Development Framework.
