The 'All' search

Choose the 'All' search tab on the Library homepage to search for all books and most journal articles available from the Library in one go.

This search is provided by a system called Summon.

Summon provides a very good way of starting a search if you are not sure where to begin and for finding general information about a topic.

If you need to do a more comprehensive search of what has been published on a particular topic, choose one of our specialist subject databases by its name from the A-Z list or visit the My Subject pages to find out what databases are available in different subjects such as History and Engineering.

Summon does not search legislation, case law, financial market information or statistics.

This search option uses the Library Catalogue.

The Catalogue covers most items available from the Library.  However, it does not include all electronic journals or individual journal articles.

Examples include Business Source Premier which cover a very wide range of business information and publications, Westlaw which covers English case law and legislation and Science Direct which contains electronic journals in many different subjects.

Library search results

The Library search displays results from multiple sources including reference sources that can help you get started researching a topic.

Introduction to a topic

The topic level results from Wikipedia provide background information and may suggest additional vocabulary associated with the topic and may be useful for finding extra search terms.

Further reading is essential

To get a good mark in academic work you will need to read and evaluate original research and scholarly works.

Evaluate information

Not everything you find through the Library search will be useful to you. You need to evaluate the information critically. It is easy to add more or new keywords to the search and refine by filters if your first search does not give the results you need.
