2015 Event: 'A True Vision of Gender Equality'

Wednesday 7th January saw the 5th annual Athena SWAN event held at the University of Leicester, with the theme for the event being ‘A True Vision of Gender Equality’.
The event was opened by Professor Paul Boyle, President and Vice Chancellor, and saw over 70 members of the University spanning all colleges and Corporate Services attend, making the event the most successful yet.

Yvonne Galligan

Our keynote speaker Professor Yvonne Galligan, Queen’s University Belfast, spoke on ‘Does Athena SWAN require a true vision of gender equality’ and highlighted the different views of different generations of women in terms of gender equality.

 

Dr Kaitlynn Mendes, Lecturer in Media and Communication, spoke on the topic ‘Gender Equality in HE in the Post-Feminist Era’, giving the case study of how women have faired in the media industry.

Finally, Dr Caren Frosch and Mr Chris Sharp spoke on unconscious bias, how it occurs, and what one may do to prevent this impacting negatively on decisions.
