Based within the Career Development Service, Unitemps at the University of Leicester was introduced in September 2012 as an internal recruitment team to offer part-time work opportunities for current students. Working as an opportunities provider for the Leicester Award, our primary focus is to help our students upskill themselves and improve their employability by generating work experience opportunities for students.

The flexible nature of the service also allows us to support the wider University needs with temporary staffing for academic departmental and support service roles. All roles (both student and non-student) will be recruited for up to a maximum of 12 weeks in duration for ‘regular roles’ or up to 12 months for ‘adhoc irregular working patterns’ in line with the University’s routes to engagement.

Operating Principles

Unitemps assignments can be:
Temporary short-term cover for a new project or existing post eg. short term sickness
To cover assignments that have adhoc, irregular working hours eg. open days

Unitemps assignments cannot be used for:
Regular workers for more than 12 weeks
Replacement contracts for maternity/paternity or secondment backfills
Circumventing the HR recruitment process due to time constraints
Assignments longer than 12 weeks duration
A means to operate a payment through the Payroll function for work completed retrospectively
