Industrial Action / Emergency General Meeting Friday, 18 March

This message was sent from the LUCU committee to all LUCU members on 15th March 2011.

Dear UCU member,

As, hopefully you are aware, our ballot for industrial action against the pension changes showed a clear majority for action amongst those who voted. In consequence we are taking two days of strike action next week on Tuesday 22nd and Thursday 24th March. On those days you should not come to work and not respond to work-related communication. Clearly strike action is always a last resort, and although we still hope that the employers will agree to talks at ACAS, we must assume that the strikes are on.

Watch the UCU website for further updates

We will be having picket lines at the entrances to the university, both to make a show of being on strike and to distribute leaflets to students and other staff members outlining the reasons behind our action. Currently we are planning to have shifts of 8.30-11.30 and 11.30-14.30, but these could be shortened if enough people volunteer. Please consider volunteering, for what is an important part of the action. Please email Steve Rooney at to let him know which day and shifts you could cover. If you have not been on a picket line before, we can give you further advice, but it is mainly about talking to people, giving out information leaflets, and can even be enjoyable - if the weather is not too bad.

We have received lots of messages seeking clarification on the strike action, so have arranged an emergency general meeting for this Friday 18th March 12.30-14.00 in Charles Wilson Second Floor LR Belvoir Park Annexe. At this meeting we will discuss the reasons behind the strike and endeavor to answer questions on its implementation.

Lastly I should say that we have discussed our action with the students' union and they are understanding of our position, and willing to distribute our leaflets through their mailing list.

Chris Talbot

LUCU Chair
