Scientific Python for Programmers Apr 24, 2019 from 01:00 PM to 05:00 PM
This course will introduce a variety of topics detailing how Python can be used at an advanced level in research settings. Python is a general programming language used in many fields which is easy to learn, yet powerful. Researchers commonly use it for everything from day-to-day scripting to full-blown applications. Because of its popularity, there are many scientific libraries available that solve most of the problems you’re likely to encounter in using python in your research. We’ll see how to make use of the 3-4 core scientific libraries other people have created to accelerate our own work, as well as covering other advanced topics in python programming.

This course will provide an introduction to recruitment, the legalities and best practice surrounding recruitment and the processes used at the University of Leicester. The interview remains the most popular method of selection and does have its fair share of strengths and weaknesses so this workshop will also explore some of the methods to improve the reliability of the interview and in particular some of the skills, tips and methods to do this.

This course will introduce you to how programming works, the basic concepts and how to write your first script. Learning how to program can help you to speed up your research by automating simple repetitive tasks so you don’t have to do them by hand. This course will teach you the basics of how to do this using the easy to learn, yet powerful, programming language Python.

Radiation Safety Training May 01, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 01:00 PM
This course covers two main areas, the awareness of the safety problem and the legal framework. Firstly the awareness of the safety problem which includes the external hazards of Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Neutron and X-ray emitters, internal radiation hazards and basic protection principles as well as radiation effects on the body and the risks. Secondly we discuss the legal framework such as the basic requirements of the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 and the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999. This part of the session also covers the position of the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive, as well as the main points of the University of Leicester Radiation Protection Rules.

This course provides information about key roles and responsibilities during these processes and allows you to see any recent changes to the system. The course will allow you to use MyStudentRecord and Business Objects, give detail on what information is required when looking at panels and boards, and provide an hands-on experience of various functions. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have at the end of the session.

Completion of this training is a requirement for all non-Heads of Department who wish to be able to act as a Chair of a Board of Examiners.
EndNote May 07, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
This session allows you to use EndNote to start creating a database of references which can then be stored, searched and used in conjunction with Word to input citations as you write. Please note EndNote is only available on University owned computers. Delegates will learn to: Set-up the EndNote software. Practice importing references as PDFs, from a bibliographic database and from the library catalogue. Create a bibliography in Word, using the ‘Cite As You Write’ toolbar. Create an independent bibliography from within EndNote.
