GENIE leads Leicester team to Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2012.

Cutting-edge science from Leicester has once again been selected for the highly prestigious Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition. Last year our geologists and physicists exhibited; in 2012 it’s the turn of our geneticists and health scientists.

Lung disease research showcased at prestigious London eventA team of Leicester scientists and health professionals, led by Dr Cas Kramer from GENIE, the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Genetics, will head down to London this summer with their exhibit, Breathless Genes: the lung and the short of it. The team includes academics, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students from our Departments of Genetics and Health Sciences as well as colleagues from the Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit based at Glenfield Hospital here in Leicester.

Dr Kramer and Professor Martin Tobin submitted an application based on Professor Tobin’s recent research on the genetics of lung health and lung disease, which involved comparing millions of differences in the DNA of almost 50,000 people and checking how healthy their lungs were. More than 100 submissions were received by the Royal Society, of which just 21 were selected for the exhibition.

Visitors to the exhibition in July will get the chance to see how lung health is measured and to learn about genetic variation between people. Scientists from the team behind the research will be on hand to discuss their work.

The Summer Science Exhibition takes place from 3 to 8 July 2012 at the Royal Society, Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG. As well as the science exhibits there will be events, workshops and even a visit from Sir Isaac Newton himself.

You can meet Professor Martin Tobin and find out more about the University of Leicester exhibit in these two videos, and follow the preparations for the exhibit on the Lung Genetics blog.
