Robes and dress

graduates applaudingYour graduation ceremony is a formal event, so clothing underneath your graduation robes should be smart.

Graduands should wear a shirt and tie with formal trousers, or a suit. Alternatively, you can wear a smart top/blouse with skirt or formal trousers, or a suitable dress. Formal/smart shoes must be worn. Please note that during the ceremony, you will ascend a small flight of steps (with handrail), cross the stage, then descend the steps and return to your seat.

Unacceptable clothing includes:

  • Jeans or denim clothing
  • Casual footwear such as trainers, plimsolls and flip-flops
  • Casual tops such as hoodies, t-shirts and branded t-shirts
  • Sportswear

If your clothing is unsuitable for the ceremony, you may be turned away and will graduate in absentia.

Academic Dress

You must order your Academic Dress for your July 2020 Graduation ceremonies by TBC.

You must wear full Academic Dress for your ceremony (gown, hood and hat/mortar board), which should be hired from our external supplier Ede and Ravenscroft.

Please note that you will be required to provide some necessary measurements to ensure your gown fits you correctly.

Take a look to see what your Academic Dress will look like.

A full refund is available (subject to criteria) if you are not able to attend your ceremony. If you do not order your gown in time for your ceremony, you may have to graduate in absentia.

If you have any further queries regarding the hiring of your gown, please contact Ede and Ravenscroft directly using the contact details below:

Email: student@edeandravenscroft.com

Telephone: 01223 734 759 (national rate)

Mortar boards and hats are not worn during the ceremony but are worn afterwards and for photographs.

Graduation Gown Bursary Fund

Students who find that the cost of hiring a gown is a barrier to attending their graduation ceremony may apply for support from the Graduation Gown Bursary Fund.

Collecting Academic Dress

You will need to collect your gown, hood and hat/mortar board from Ede and Ravenscroft in the Sports Hall at the Charles Wilson Building on the main University campus on the day of your ceremony.
