Ceremony details

Please check the timings for your ceremony carefully. You should allow time to collect your academic dress and ensure you and your guests arrive at De Montfort Hall in plenty of time for your ceremony. The Hall is in walking distance. Please allow at least 10 minutes to walk there from the University. Watch our video on preparing for your Graduation.

When you arrive at De Montfort Hall, check-in is via the Graduand’s Entrance, where you will be given your ticket. Once checked in, please make sure you take your seat.

If you have personal belongings that your guests can’t look after, please put them in the cloakroom at De Montfort Hall. Access to the cloakroom is via the Guest’s Entrance at the front of the Hall.

For security and space reasons, luggage or other large personal items should not be taken into the Hall. Any such items brought to the venue will be placed in storage outside the Hall. This will be supervised, however please be aware that using this storage is at the owner’s risk and neither the Hall nor the University can accept responsibility for any loss or damage.

What happens during the ceremony

  • You will be asked to stand when the academic procession enters De Montfort Hall.
  • The National Anthem is then sung together and the Chancellor will make an opening speech.
  • The Registrar will ask you to stand as a group when it is time for you to be presented.
  • The Chancellor will say “By the authority of the Senate, I admit candidates both present and absent to the several degrees for which they are presented”.
  • Then you will sit down and you will be asked to go onto the stage a row at a time. The order will be the same as the order printed in the programme.
  • Please leave programmes, paper and belongings on your seat and carry your mortarboard in your left hand.

  • When your name is called out by the Head of College, please walk to the Chancellor or the President and Vice-Chancellor, shake his right hand and leave the stage. If for cultural reasons you do not wish to shake hands, pause in front of the Chancellor and give a small bow.
  • The Chancellor or President and Vice-Chancellor will shake your hand. If you are a Doctoral student or prize winner he will say a few words.
  • The taking of ‘selfies’ on stage is not permitted, and you must also not create photo opportunities on stage by hugging or in any other way intruding on the personal space of any of the officiating officers.

  • Once all the degrees have been conferred there will be a closing speech by the Vice-Chancellor and the congregation will be declared closed.
  • Please stand while the academic procession leaves the De Montfort Hall and do not leave the hall.
  • Once the procession has left, please sit down and wait to receive your degree certificate.
