Gondar Masters in Public Health Programme

In 2001 a grant was awarded by the British Council under the DFID Education Links programme to adapt the University of Leicester Health Services Research modular masters degree programme for the Ethiopian context.  This involved staff exchanges with members of staff at the Gondar College of Medical Sciences (now Gondar University) developing a new modular curriculum in Leicester with support from staff in Leicester. The modular part-time MPH course began in October 2003. The participants return to their work for the most of the year where they can apply their new skills immediately.  This pattern was novel for Ethiopia and it has aroused interest outside Gondar.

The Leicester modules included some that had been modified from the Leicester programme. Two senior Gondar staff then spent a further two months in developing further modules for the programme.

The modular structure of the course has proved adaptable.  From an early stage, a common core of topics was identified which has provided the basis for a wide-ranging set of specialist masters degrees.  It is now helping to improve the qualifications and skills of practitioners in the areas of Nutrition, Epidemiology and Maternal and Child Health and is run completely independently of University of Leicester.
