Gondar Masters in Public Health Programme

A grant was awarded by the British Council under the DFID Education Links programme to adapt the Health Services Research modular programme for the Thiopian context.  This involved staff exchanges with members of staff at the Gondar College of Medical Sciences (now Gondar University) studying the modules in Leicester, along with support from staff in Leicester with curriculum design and also assesment.

The modular part-time MPH course began in October 2003. The participants return to their work for the most of the year where they can apply their new skills immediately.  This pattern is novel for Ethiopia and it has aroused interest outside Gondar.  The modules included those that had been modified from ones taught in Leicester. Two senior Gondar staff then spent two months and developing further modules for the programme.

In February 2003, Professor Silverman went to Gondar to evaluate the programme’s progress with students giving encouraging reports.  This programme is now helping to improve the qualifications and skills of practitioners in the areas of Nutrition, Epidemiology and Maternal and Child Health and is run completely independently of Leicester.
