My research focuses on bowel cancer. Research into bowel cancer is critical; currently up to half of patients diagnosed with bowel cancer present at a stage, where sadly, we are unable to offer potentially curative treatment. One approach to help decrease the burden of bowel cancer, is to consider treatments which prevent or delay the onset of cancer. My research focuses on curcumin, a component of turmeric, often used in curries, in preventing bowel cancer. I use samples obtained from patients who have had surgery for bowel cancer, to ensure that my research results have a greater chance of reflecting how curcumin may affect patient’s cancer cells. It is hoped that the research I am undertaking in the Department of Cancer Studies as part of my PhD, will improve our understanding of cancer biology and develop the use of cancer prevention agents in a clinical setting.
