Razif Abas

Razif AbasMy name is Razif Abas and I am a  2nd year PhD student in the Department of Cardiovascular Science. I am supervised by Dr Karl Herbert and Dr Marcin Wozniak. The scope of my project includes investigating dysfunctional endothelium, vascular ageing and inflammation and atherogenesis development. It is implicit that mitochondria are important determinants of endothelial cell function and the maintenance of endothelial homeostasis. However, we now wish to test the hypothesis that mitochondrial dysfunction accelerates a pro-atherogenic endothelial phenotype via activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and/or NFkB. We will test this hypothesis using in vitro models of mitochondrial dysfunction in human endothelial cells. In order to investigate the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the development of a pro-inflammatory phenotype, human umbilical vascular endothelial cells and EA.hy926 cells will be used as in vitro models. All of the techniques required for this work are established in our laboratories in Glenfield Hospital, University of Leicester.
