Jenni Chambers

Head RCUK Public Engagement with Research for Research Councils UK

About Jenni ChambersJenni Chambers

Jenni is Head of Public Engagement with Research for RCUK, working with the HE sector through programmes such as RCUK PER Catalyst Seed Fund, RCUK Schools University Partnership Initiative and the (currently live) RCUK SEE-PER funding call to encourage better support for researchers engaging the public. She has worked in higher education policy since 2008 when she joined HEFCE as an HE Policy Advisor specialising in public engagement. In her seven years with HEFCE she worked on various aspects of research and knowledge exchange policy, including aspects of HEIF (the Higher Education Innovation Fund) and led on public engagement, overseeing engagement initiatives such as the Beacons for Public Engagement, South East Coastal Communities and the continued support for the NCCPE (National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement).

During her employment with HEFCE Jenni was pleased to be able to take up two secondment positions, the first with the NCCPE managing Research for Community Heritage a project which brought together AHRC research teams and community organisations supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund to explore aspects of local heritage. The second secondment was with the PER (Public Engagement with Research) team in the RCUK Executive Directorate, where she has now returned.

Prior to 2008 Jenni was an archaeological researcher specialising in Ice Age stone tools and site formation processes, which translated into a lot of wandering around waist deep in Welsh rivers. In-between in-river excursions she encouraged people to engage with their Ice Age heritage, and for a memorable period offered the public a ‘Pet Rock identification service’.

Jenni re-joined the RCUK Executive Directorate as Head of Public Engagement with Research in June 2015.
