Marketing yourself

Building student awareness

In order for you to be a successful Course Rep and improve how your course is run, the first thing you will need to do is make students aware that you are their Course Rep.

Raise awareness:

  • Social Media
Over the years, this has become a major factor in business marketing but it can also be applied to the Course Rep system. Creating a Facebook group and Twitter account allows students to contact you directly and will increase the flow of feedback because your account will be live 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can also use this to inform students of the progress you and your department have been making.

  • Explaining your role at the start of a lecture
This can be a quick and easy way to let students know that you are their Course Rep. Many of them will have voted for you in the elections but there will still be some that do not know who you are. By doing this, they can put a face to the name that is in the information for students section.
  • Use department noticeboards
Ask you department if you can put up a sign informing students of your role. Whenever fellow students go and see someone in the department, they will be reminded of who you are, what you do and how you can help them.

For issues that students don't want to put in the public domain, the College has put in place a feedback form that will go directly to your email. This can be found in the information for students section. You are not required to be a counsellor to students, for any personal (ie non academic) matters that a student approaches you with, please refer them to the Contacts page to find the right person to talk to.
