Student-Staff Committee (SSC)

SSC meetings are held between the Course Reps a member of staff in your department. The aim is to form a good working relationship with the department so you can raise issues or questions about your course.

The SSC is about building good relationships and provides an official platform to talk about what works well, or doesn't, and how that experience can be managed effectively. It is a feedback system that is essential to the development of the delivery of your course which serves to improve the student and staff experience at the University.

It is important to remember that SSCs are not just for voicing criticisms, positive feedback is welcomed by departments and can be very constructive.

Meeting frequency

As well as the standard list below, additional meetings can be arranged where it is felt that an issue needs to be addressed immediately.

  • Undergraduate - meet at least 3 times a year
  • Postgraduate - meet once a term

PreparationSSC meeting

These meetings are not to be taken lightly.  To support the students efficiently, relevant material must be prepared and presented professionally.

  1. It is encouraged for the Course Rep to be familiar with minutes of past meetings to get an idea of topics which may be discussed at the beginning of the next.
  2. The agenda will also place you in a prime position to liaise with staff and sort out existing issues/problems quickly and efficiently.
  3. Meet with students to gather common concerns and dicuss them with other Course Reps to see how best to approach your department.

Structure

The following lists the standard structure of SSC meetings:

  • Minutes of previous meeting.
  • Minor items and reports of progress.
  • Agenda items discussed.
  • Any other Business.
  • Chair will conclude the meeting and dates for the next will be discussed.

Survival!

Always remember you are representing students in your department, course and year group who have voted for you and trust in you to help them be heard.  It is therefore important to:

  • Be punctual
  • Be polite
  • Be constructive
  • Listen
  • Ask questions
  • Take notes
  • Discuss solutions to issues/problems raised

Ask your department for the date of your next SSC so you can plan this into your schedule.
