Chaplaincy Lecture 2014

Rev'd Dr Michael N. Jagessar

Our lecture this year took place on Wednesday 26th February 2014.

The Revd Dr Michael N. Jagessar, Moderator of the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church (2012-2014)and Secretary for Racial Justice & Intercultural Ministry took as his title

“Drinking from Many Wells: Excerpts from an Interfaith Journey”

How do we negotiate ‘belonging’ and ‘identity(ies)’ in the fullness of many world religious traditions simultaneously? In what ways can an interfaith world help me confidently re-negotiate my own faith?

Inheriting an interfaith life brings with it all the extras that come with the blessings of multiple religious heritages/identities, including the demands and tensions. How do we negotiate and re-negotiate belonging and identity(ies) in the fullness of two or three religious traditions simultaneously? In what ways can a journey shaped by diverse religious impulses help me understand my own faith with a confidence that at the same time demands that I understand it differently? Are ecclesial and religious traditions equipped to embrace people with multiple religious identities and experiences?
