The Sir Robert and Lady Hilary Burgess Research and Teaching Fund

Professor Sir Robert Burgess explains his philosophy behind establishing a new fund to mark his retirement as Vice-Chancellor

Vice-Chancellor and Hilary BurgessMy wife, Hilary, and I believe that Higher Education is a power for the good – improving lives and harnessing talent through excellent teaching and transforming society through inspirational research. I have been very fortunate during my time to receive tremendous support from so many alumni and friends who have helped make the University what it is today.

This support has been shown in many ways, not least through the Annual Fund Appeal, which to date has raised over £1m to advance research, high quality teaching and the student experience.  This outstanding and often life-changing support has been made possible by people, like you, who have chosen the University as one of their charitable causes. Every single person who makes a gift, no matter how modest, can make a big difference and, together with many others, help ensure that the University continues to grow and flourish.

So, in my final year, and in the spirit of the tremendous support shown by Leicester alumni and friends, we have chosen to establish “The Sir Robert and Lady Hilary Burgess Research and Teaching Fund” with an initial target of £2m.  To underline our commitment we have launched the fund with a personal donation.

By giving to the Fund, you will be supporting projects which epitomise our strong belief that research and teaching are not only complementary, they are inseparable.  You will be helping some of the brightest minds and leading research teams to tackle some of our greatest global challenges, including: fighting ill health and disease; building a safe and just world, exploring human identity and inter-cultural interactions; protecting our world and exploring the Universe; and understanding change in culture and society.

The Fund will also further support research and teaching excellence by providing postgraduate scholarships, including opportunities to study for a Doctorate in Education (EdD), enabling educators to improve their practice, develop the best curriculum and ultimately improve the quality of education for future generations.

Add your support to the Sir Robert and Lady Hilary Burgess Research and Teaching Fund.
