We offer a range of botanical courses focusing on plant identification, whatever your skill level. You can also take a Field Identification Skills Certificate to assess your plant identification and botanical surveying proficiency.  Click on the links below for further information.


Botany for beginners 2017: an introduction to plant identification
(seven monthly modules).

Get started with identifying local wild plants. Open to all. Assumes absolutely no previous knowledge at all!

Plant Identification Skills 2017-18 (two modules).

A course for people with some biological knowledge.
October to December. Learn how to identify the commoner plant families in the British Isles.
April to June. Learn how to identify species by sight and how to use identification keys, field guides, Floras and other media.

Identifying mosses & liverworts: an introduction

2/3 December 2017, at the Botanic Garden (2nd) and in the field (3rd). A laboratory and field class on how to identify common mosses & liverworts in the field using a hand-lens and the recently published field guide.
Bryophyte workshop

“Brachythecium and Eurhynchium s.l. - the basics” {reprise}

22 January 2017, at the Botanic Garden. A laboratory class on how to identify these common pleurocarp mosses. A repeat by popular demand of the 21 January class. Now fully booked.


Guided Tours of the Botanic Garden & Attenborough Arboretum

We regret that the University Catering Dept. will be not be providing a café in the Botanic Garden this summer.
