Citizenship and Belonging in Unsettling Times

Public engagement events

The experiences of migrants coming to live in London and Leicester were the focus of free interactive public events in London in November 2017 and in Leicester in September 2017.

Citizenship and Belonging in Unsettling Times was organised in collaboration with the Leicester Migration Network, and the Unit for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement (DICE) in the School of Media, Communication and Sociology at the University of Leicester.

The events were an opportunity to consider the insights generated by the project into migrants’ experiences of becoming British citizens as well as broader issues of migration and belonging. Speakers and members of the audience discussed pressing issues of citizenship and belonging.

Speakers at the London event included Don Flynn (former director of the Migrants’ Rights Network), Dr Melanie Cook (King's College), Rockyaha Sylla (Freedom from Torture), De Helia Lopez Zarzosa (Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation), and Dr Leah Bassel (University of Leicester).

Speakers at the Leicester event included Zrinka Bralo (CEO, Migrants Organise), Dr Nando Sigona (University of Birmingham), Dr Leah Bassel (University of Leicester), and Tahera Khan (Race Equality Centre); it was chaired by Surinder Sharma (DICE).
