Research interests:

I am interested in finding the impact of Religious Civil Society Organizations, otherwise known as Faith Based Organizations - on poverty alleviation services to women in rural communities in Nigeria, especially given the rate of poverty affecting the rural areas in Nigeria and vulnerability of women to this poverty. My research aims to compare the service delivery of a Faith Based Organization and a secular Non-Governmental Organization involved in poverty alleviation services to women in two rural communities in Nigeria, with the aim of finding out if there are impacts that Faith Based Organizations make in alleviating poverty affecting rural women in Nigeria through their service delivery.

Research question:

  • What are the differences between FBOs and secular NGOs in terms of their poverty alleviation service delivery to rural women in today's Nigeria?

Key literature:

The study covers literature in Global civil society, Religion and Development, Faith Based Organizations and Secular NGOs, Gender and Poverty alleviation in Developing countries – Sub-Sahara Africa and Nigeria.

Methodology:

The research is ethnographic in nature and this will entail using participant observation and interview methods in accessing data. The use of ethnography is to grant the researcher the opportunity of conducting in-depth study of the communities where the aid organizations or civil society organizations deliver poverty alleviation services to women in need, as well as the aid organizations selected for the study.
