The best piece of advice I could give to anyone thinking about studying sociology is to open your mind and come out of your academic comfort zone and get inspired.

Why did you choose to study Sociology at the University of Leicester?

It is one of the oldest Sociology departments and the University of Leicester has a great reputation! Given the complexity of the discipline, the right lecturers and facilities is essential, Leicester was just the best option.

How has studying Sociology influenced your career choice?

In regard to my employment choices, it has pushed me to continue acquiring knowledge. I am due to start a MA in September 2016, which without the vast subject area which is Sociology I would never have considered. When I graduated I did as most graduates do, I think, I panicked. What I first loved about sociology, its expansive and multifaceted subject area had turned on me and it felt like I would never decide which area I wanted to focus on in my career. In fact the opposite has happened, sociology has enabled me to apply myself and really discover what I want to do in my career.

How has Sociology shaped your view of everyday life?

Sociology opened up my eyes to a number of different things that go on in the world. It has allowed me to engage with current events through theory using a deeper understanding of how sociology works. It has given me the confidence to question everything, to look beyond what is in front of my eyes and gain a deeper understanding of the world.

What advice would you give to anyone considering studying Sociology?

Honestly, be ready to question everything, take nothing for granted and I can guarantee you will never look at the world around you the same again. Your opinions will change, you'll have some of the most rewarding conversations and you'll find interest in things you'd never even thought about. The best piece of advice I could give to anyone thinking about studying sociology is to open your mind and come out of your academic comfort zone and get inspired.
