A symposium in Honour of Professor Eric Dunning was celebrated last 4th March 2017 at College Court, Leicester.

This event celebrated the life’s work of Professor Eric Dunning. Eric, an Emeritus Professor in the School of Media, Communication and Sociology, has spent nearly his entire working life at Leicester, and has made a huge contribution to Department of Sociology, and to the discipline more generally. Perhaps best known for his work on the sociology of sport, Eric also wrote extensively on a range of other topics including violence, civilisation, leisure, race and ethnicity, and sociological theory.

The event featured a number of papers in honour of Eric and his work. These ranged from discussions of the development of the sociology of sport (and Eric’s role within in) to analyses of normative codes and their role in the ascendancy of populism. The symposium was very well attended, with delegates travelling from South America, Australia and across the UK and Europe.
