Iris Lightfoote was educated in Leicester at primary and secondary levels through to Leicester Polytechnic and University of Leicester where she gained a BA in Social Sciences and an MA in Criminology respectively. She was a Cropwood Fellow at Cambridge University in 1995. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Loughborough University in 2006. Having worked at Nottingham City Council and Leicester City Council housing departments, Iris joined The Race Equality Centre as a criminal justice officer, becoming Chief Executive in 2001. During this period Iris also lectured part time at De Montfort University. In her time as Chief Executive she has brought about significant development in the strategic importance and functioning of The Race Equality Centre, enabling the organisation to be a key participant in local policy debates promoting race equality and racial justice through a number of service provisions.
