Leicester’s first community awareness conference on radicalisation and extremism held on 4th May 2017, 10.00 am - 4.00 pm at TREC, 2nd Floor, Phoenix Yard, 5-9 Upper Brown St, Leicester, LE1 5TE

The Promoting Empowerment and Community Education (P.E.a.C.E) project is Leicester’s very first radicalisation and extremism prevention and awareness community service. P.E.a.C.E aims to help prevent public fear, distrust and hostility in order to increase community cohesion and the promotion of shared common values.

P.E.a.C.E will be hosting Leicester’s first community awareness conference on radicalisation and extremism on 4th May 2017, 10.00 am - 4.00 pm at TREC, 2nd Floor, Phoenix Yard, 5-9 Upper Brown St, Leicester, LE1 5TE. The conference, ‘Education – Not Radicalisation’, is an inter-agency event co-hosted by London based The Salam Project and has been organised in response to growing national concerns linked to the rise of radicalisation, extremism and terrorism in the UK.

Mr. Aadam Muhammad founder of P.E.a.C.E said, ‘the distressing events on the 22nd March 2017 in Westminster, London has once again brought the issue of radicalisation and terrorism to the public’s attention. In answer to this, we’ve formed a partnership with The Salam Project to organise this unique conference and help get the crucial answers to the public” he stated. ‘It’s the first event of its kind in Leicester and we want to make sure it helps everybody here to continue living in a peaceful and harmonious City” he expressed.

The Education – Not Radicalisation conference aims to involve key note speakers from local groups; mini workshops; information stalls; community question time and live entertainment. Mr Ismael Lea South, Director of the Salam Project said, “We want to invite other community based projects to join us and contribute to make the day a huge success. Both of our organisations are firmly committed to educating parents, families and communities about how to successfully address radicalisation. We’ve all got to pull together to find the solutions so that we can then move forward together as one” he added.

The conference organisers hope that key local agencies will also participate and help to bring this special event to the citizens of Leicester.

“We aim to invite representatives from the Local Authorities and statutory agencies in order to formerly address any community concerns” Mr Muhammad commented. “Protecting vulnerable people from radicalisation is the collective responsibility of everyone in Leicester and Leicestershire. If we can teach the public how to do this - then we’re half way there already” Mr. Lea South concluded.
