Free Public Debate

Citizenship and Belonging in Unsettling Times

A public debate exploring issues of citizenship, migration and belonging was held on Wednesday 13th September at the University of Leicester.

About the event

In the context of Brexit, debates over citizenship, immigration and belonging have gained new urgency. This event provided a unique opportunity for academics, migrant rights advocates, politicians and members of the public to explore these issues together. Speakers discussed the results from the Economic and Social Research Council funded project ‘The UK Citizenship Process: Exploring Immigrants’ Experiences’. A lively question and answer session was an opportunity to consider the research findings at a personal level. One participant said, "I am more aware of the pressure on migrants trying to become British citizens. I will look into volunteering to support migrants. It has made me question what it is to be British."

Dr Leah Bassel, Principal Investigator of the project said, "Our aim for the event was to bring the findings and recommendations from our project into public debate. We certainly moved beyond the bullet points, and heard a call for action in these unsettling times. The event drew on the rich knowledge and experiences of our diverse speakers and audience."
