DICE unit celebrated International Women's Day with the Department of Sociology

Last Wednesday 9th March 2016, students, staff and people from the community, enjoyed a 'Student mothers in Higher Education: two (and more) for the price of one - widening participation and tackling child poverty' research seminar focussing on the perceived benefits of study and their effects on the lives of student mothers, and especially their children's educational trajectories. It also explores two inter-connected policies such as widening participation and tackling child poverty.

One of the issues discussed by Professor Claire Callender of Higher Education Studies at UCL Institute of Education and at Birkbeck, University of London, was the transformational and liberating nature caused by completing the academic study of social sciences, and how it enabled and encouraged these mothers’ involvement and engagement with their children’s learning and education.

This research seminar were organised by the Department of Sociology and the unit for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement (DICE) in celebration of International Women’s Day 2016.
