A New Approach to BME Participation in Sport & Physical Activity’

DICE and Sporting Equals have responded to the Government’s recent consultation document ‘A New Strategy for Sport’ with written evidence recommending the need for: ‘A New Approach to BME Participation in Sport & Physical Activity’.

Our evidence outlines how our research shows that BME communities around the UK often suffer from lack of adequate facilities and provision for sport and physical exercise, but also how a lack of representation of BMEs in sports governing bodies and other organisations is doing damage to our capacity to change the current situation.

It points out that these problems of lack of access and role models are especially acute for Muslim girls, who lack parental support and often the right sorts of contexts and encouragement to get involved in sport or physical activity.

The evidence ends with a number of key recommendations for the way forward.
