Professor in Space Physics

JonJon Lapington leads the High-Speed Imaging research group at the Space Research Centre, University of Leicester. Jon read Natural Sciences at Cambridge University and gained a PhD in Space Physics from University College London. After positions at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL, and the Center for Space Physics, Boston University, he moved to the Space Research Centre at Leicester in 2004. His research interests centre on the physics of optical, UV and X-ray photon, and particle counting detectors for high speed imaging, photon-counting applications in space science and astronomy. He is playing a major role in the development of the SST-2M camera system for the UK consortium of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, and is currently involved with UK participation in the proposed ESA ATHENA X-Ray Observatory Mission. His current research themes include; novel materials and techniques for photodetectors (graphene, diamond and atomic layer deposition), multi-channel picosecond photon timing for high content biology, high resolution photon imaging readout techniques, and scene-adaptive digital electronics for high speed photon-counting imaging. He also has a significant knowledge transfer interests focused on translation of detector technologies developed for space into other sectors including; fluorescence lifetime imaging, time-resolved Raman spectroscopy, and atmospheric trace gas analysis using cavity ring down techniques.

Steve Leach, PhD, Post Doctoral Research Associate

Steve LeachFollowing a successful and fulfilling early career in the IT industry, and with inspiration from the Phoenix mission on Mars, Steve decided to renew his interest in science and ambition to participate in space research. Completing a 1st class Physics degree in 2011 and winning an outstanding achievement award paved the way onto his PhD research at the Space Research Centre. His research with Microchannel Plate detectors and an adaptive electronic readout is directed at high speed imaging science in particular planetary auroral and astrophysical imaging. Steve regularly gives outreach talks to inspire the younger audience towards a career in the space sector. “My passion for space exploration continues and I feel privileged to be involved at this exciting time as humans tiptoe at the shoreline preparing to permanently step out towards new worlds.”

Jamie Williams, PhD*, Post Doctoral Research Associate

JamieOriginally from North Yorkshire, Jamie graduated from the University of Manchester in 2013 with a 1st class Masters in Theoretical Physics. During his PhD research at the University of Leicester, Jamie investigated the potential for new graphene-based photodetectors, from X-ray to Terahertz. Jamie submitted his thesis in March 2017 and was awarded his PhD in November 2017 (subject to completion of corrections).

Alongside ongoing work on graphene, Jamie is now also involved in researching new technologies for, and applications of, the CHEC-S camera for the Cherenkov Telescope Array.

Angaraj Duara, MPhys, Postgraduate Research Student

After winning the 2013 High Achiever's Award from the University of Leicester International Study Centre, AngarajAngaraj graduated from the University of Leicester in 2017 with a 1st class Masters in Physics with Astrophysics. In 2016 he did an internship at Durham Centre for Advanced Instrumentation, working on the Balloon-borne Imaging Telescope (aka SuperBIT), a near space imaging mission in collaboration with JPL-NASA, University of Toronto, Durham Centre for Advanced Instrumentation and Princeton University. Angaraj is currently doing a PhD in Very High Energy Astrophysics for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), focussing on the detectors. He has been heavily involved in science communication, including guest speaker at Leicester Astronomical Society and BBC Stargazing Live. At a young age, Angaraj was inspired by the life and work of NASA Astronaut Kalpana Chawla.
