Professor Warwick studied as an undergraduate at Birmingham University, where he gained first-class honours in Physics (1970). His PhD was in Radio Astronomy (Jodrell Bank Observatory, University of Manchester, 1975).   He was appointed as  Lecturer in Physics at the University of Leicester in 1976 and subsequently promoted to Reader (1989) and then Professor (1999).  He served as Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 2002-2005.  He was Head of the X-ray and Observational Astronomy Group from 2005-2011.

Research interests

My research expertise is in the field of High Energy Astrophysics.  I have extensive experience in the analysis and interpretation of data obtained from space-based observatories, including Ariel V, Einstein, EXOSAT, Ginga, ROSAT, ASCA, XMM-Newton and Chandra. My current research interests are focused on:

  • The X-ray properties of normal galaxies;
  • X-ray source populations in the Galaxy;
  • The Galactic Centre.

  • First Year Mathematics (for Physicists) - course 1720
  • Atoms and Nuclei - course 3220
  • Digital Image Processing - course 3624

Recent Membership of External Bodies

  • Particle-Physics, Astronomy and Nuclear Physics (PPAN) Committee, STFC, 2009-2011
  • Science Board, STFC, 2011-2013
  • Chair - Chandra Cycle 14 Peer Review, 2012
