I lead the High-Speed Imaging research group at the Space Research Centre, University of Leicester.

I read Natural Sciences at Cambridge University and gained a PhD in Space Physics from University College London. After positions at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL, and the Center for Space Physics, Boston University, I moved to the Space Research Centre at Leicester in 2004.

Research

My research interests centre on the physics of optical, UV and X-ray photon, and particle counting detectors for high speed imaging, photon-counting applications in space science and astronomy.

I lead the development of the GCT camera system for the UK consortium of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, and am currently promoting UK involvement in the proposal for a Wide Field Imager instrument on the European Space Agency ATHENA X-Ray Observatory Mission.

My current research themes include:

  • Novel materials and techniques for photodetectors (graphene, diamond and atomic layer deposition)
  • Multi-channel picosecond photon timing for high content biology
  • High resolution photon imaging readout techniques
  • Scene-adaptive digital electronics for high speed photon-counting imaging.

I also have a significant knowledge of transfer activity translating technologies developed for space into other sectors including

  • High speed imaging detectors with picosecond timing for time resolved spectroscopies including fluorescence lifetime imaging
  • Time-resolved Raman spectroscopy and LIDAR
  • Other applications for time tagged photon imaging including atmospheric trace gas analysis using cavity ring down techniques and confocal microscopy

Entrepreneurship

I have engaged in numerous knowledge exchange and technology transfer activities over the past two decades with the goal of translating detector technologies originally developed for use in space missions to terrestrial applications. These projects have involved working closely with academic and industrial collaborators in the UK, Europe and worldwide.

Current technology transfer projects include collaborations with CERN to utilise several ASICs developed for LHC in very high speed photomultipliers with uses in

  • Biological, medical, environmental, security high energy physics applications
  • Investigations into novel materials for photosensors
  • New techniques for time-resolved Raman spectroscopy

I have strong links with several UK industrial partners and on-going collaborations with UK SMEs including

  • Photek (manufacturers of custom PMTs)
  • IS-Instruments (specialists in LIDAR and Raman spectroscopy)
  • Micron Semiconductors (developers of custom silicon devices)

I share my knowledge exchange expertise with the community by sitting on the STFC Innovations Partnership Scheme Panel.

Science communication

My outreach activities include the organisation of a hands-on science week catering for 12 primary schools in my local area, science talks and practical demonstrations at schools. I have also been a regular speaker at several astronomical societies.
