Biography

Dr Moore holds a degree in mathematics and meteorology from the University of Reading. He joined the Earth Observation Science group at the University of Leicester, completing his PhD work on measuring CFC replacements in the upper troposphere from MIPAS. He took up a post-doctoral role at the University of Leicester to investigate the detection and retrieval of peroxyacetyl nitrate and acetone from MIPAS spectra and now leads the Atmospheric composition sub-group. He became part of the UK National Centre for Earth Observation, which is a partnership of over 100 scientists from 26 institutions with his role focusing on analyzing IASI spectra for producing unique datasets of carbon monoxide and other volatile organic compounds. The role has also incorporated a 6-month EUMETSAT project assessing methods of radiometric inter-comparison of IASI and AATSR radiances and brightness temperatures. The project provided the basis for long-term calibration benefits for both instruments, extending towards the flight of the second IASI instrument and the Sentinel-3/SLSTR era. He has been an author on 11 peer reviewed journal papers.

Research interests

My research interests focus on the global mapping of trace gas carbon species (e.g. CO, PAN, HCOOH and non-methane volatile organic compounds (VOCs)) from space in order to quantifying the interactions between the biosphere and the atmosphere, and to understand how these interactions impact air quality and climate.

This includes the following areas:

  • Satellite trace gas retrieval algorithms
  • Global mapping of atmospheric composition using satellites
  • Remote sensing of volcanoes and wildfires
  • Reference Atmospheres for MIPAS: Standard Atmospheres (RAMstan)
  • Monitoring land cover change (including Sentinel-2 data)
