Mechanical Workshop

The role of the workshop is to provide technical support to students and staff of the Department of Physics & Astronomy and The College of Science and Engineering. We machine mechanical components to very high specification using conventional and CAD/CAM machining methods. We also have welding facilities which allows us to fabricate many different components including ultra high vacuum vessels (UHV) and a Dimension Elite Additive Manufacturing/3D Printer for Rapid Prototyping. We can work from pencil sketches and CAD drawings.

Our highly skilled and friendly team are happy to advise you on the best way of building the equipment to achieve your experimental goals. Our team has a wealth of experience and is used to producing unusual and complicated components to a very high tolerance.

Physics & Astronomy Mechanical Workshop

We are currently supporting various research groups including the study of the Earth's Ionosphere (Radio and Space Plasma Physics), space research (Space Research Centre) and X-ray Astronomy (X-ray and Observational Astronomy). We also deal with day to day support to the department and help undergraduate and post graduate student projects .
