'A pathway to impact: Figure skating judging, sex education, and beyond'

My research aims to understand and inform how people make decisions, for example about their health, finance, and environmental impacts. When I first studied the psychology of judgment and decision making, I was encouraged to do theory-based rather than applied research. The tide has changed. Especially in the UK, researchers are now expected to plan a “pathway to impact” or a strategy for improving people's lives. In this presentation, I will discuss my journey from theory-based to applied research, as well as successes and failures in achieving impact. Example projects include figure skating judging, adolescent sex education, public perceptions of climate change, and consumers' financial decision making.
