The First Year undergrads are arriving, the dining facilities are overflowing and your Third year project Students are baying for attention… but there's research to do…. back to reality!

But before that, it's sad to be losing some of our Colleagues who have volunteered under the VERVES Scheme, and we wish them the best in their new ventures across the world. Even at the top things are changing, with Bob Burgess's retirement, Paul Boyle has arrived as our new VC and he is already booking in with Heads to tour the Departments.

There are a few topical items to draw to your attention:

First - Congratulations to Claire Gibson on her Horizon appearance earlier this week. It's great to see the BBC taking more notice of UK and Leicester expertise! If you missed it you can find that from here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04knbny

OPEN ACCESS for our research publication: it is important that we all remember to archive our submitted and/or published work and that we take note of the open access rules of our funding bodies and the University. There's a very easy way of doing this - through the IRIS system - so get into the habit when you submit the manuscript, just pop into your IRIS account and submit it there too - the library staff will do all the work for you. Open access to our published work is going to be important for submission in the next REF! Full information is on this website http://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/researchsupport/policyandstrategy/open-access/pubpolicy

The College is having a review of the Themes and I've asked all the Strand Leads to comment. If anyone else would like to make comments, such as noting things that you find helpful/unhelpful from the Theme or suggestions for the future, please email Emma and Ian.

We have a letter from a local Primary School that is looking for volunteers to go in and spend a couple of hours on some biology with their 7-11 year olds. If anyone is interested please contact Emma. I've done this in the past and it is great fun. We took in some microscopes and looked at pond water and flies…. and take some pictures (for example). It's a great way of developing your outreach skills.

Volko Straub is re-starting our Neuroscience Journal Club: Tues 7th October in HWB 4/70 at 9 am. This is open to all PhD Students and Postdocs. Please get involved and make it your own.

Please let Emma and I know how we can help you in developing your research funding.
