Research Funding

External Funding Opportunities

Funding opportunities for the College for major funders are updated 6-weekly and are available on the College Funding web page.

Opportunities are also available in calendar format on the Funding Opportunities Calendar.

Funding opportunities specific to the Neuroscience & Behaviour Theme are on the Theme Funding Pages.

Neuroscience, Psychology & Behaviour Travel Scheme

A limited number of travel awards are available each year to support academic staff travel to conferences – such awards are only available for funding towards conference attendance where the staff member is presenting work (i.e. poster/oral presentation). Each travel award is worth up to £500 and may be used to support travel both in the UK and abroad. Staff are strongly encouraged to apply for externally funded travel awards before applying for a departmental travel award. In order to apply staff should send a brief summary (no more than half page A4) detailing the purpose of the trip, a breakdown of the expected cost and details of any application for an externally funded travel award. All applications need to be made as far in advance of making the trip as possible and before making the proposed trip. Applications should be sent to Becky Quinn for consideration by the management group. If an application is approved the staff member may either arrange for travel to be purchased via smarter purchasing or fill out an EC1 form (along with receipts) and submit to either Becky Quinn or Anna Mazur. All expenses claimed must comply with the University financial regulations.

Publication Charges

There are some limited funds available within the department to help cover the costs of journal publication charges (e.g. page charges). This is dependent upon two criteria - the first is that the publication doesn’t meet the criteria for the costs to be covered by the library funds and secondly the target journal is considered to be of a scientific quality sufficient to justify payment of page charges. If you are planning on submitting a paper to a journal with publication charges and wish to explore whether departmental funds can cover this then please email HoD with the following details before the paper is submitted:

  • Target journal
  • Author list
  • Brief description of why this journal is being targeted
  • Estimated total cost
  • Confirmation that these costs are not eligible to be supported by the library funds and/or are not covered by the relevant grant award leading to the publication.

A decision will be made as promptly as possible.
