Thesis title

Museums and Traumatic Memories: Representing Taiwanese ‘Comfort Women’

Thesis description

In this project, I will introduce a case study, the Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation (TWRF) which is a social welfare institution established a new museum for Taiwanese comfort women in Taipei.

By illustrating with exhibitions and action research at the TWRF, I shall describe what kinds of challenges museum collaborators may encounter while representing Taiwanese comfort women’s traumatic memories. Particularly, exhibiting Taiwanese comfort women’s works produced in the private setting of the art therapy workshops might be controversial.

My research looks at the challenges of representation and power relations and seeks to understand the possible strategies to resolve conflicts in the process of interdisciplinary collaboration.
